Wait Until Dark

Electric City Playhouse, 2025
Directed by Scott Gibson and Lynne Gibson

I played Susy Hendrix, the thriller’s recently blinded lead. Her husband, Sam, goes to work, leaving her home alone with nobody around except her nemesis, the preteen Gloria. Three con men who arranged Sam’s work trip arrive on a mission to make Susy help them obtain a doll full of heroin that he had been tricked into smuggling home from across the border. There’s just one problem – it’s missing.

This has been my most challenging and rewarding role so far. Beyond the research and practice required to convincingly and respectfully play a blind woman, I had half a dozen stunt falls and only left the stage for a few seconds at a time. Susy spends the play in constant conversation, getting increasingly worked up about the events unfolding around her until the frantic final showdown. The show’s pacing relied heavily on my constantly escalating energy, and achieving the intensity demanded by the climactic torture and attack sequence required Josh Pruiett (Roat) and I to build a strong foundation of trust. We had a blast eliciting genuine gasps and yelps of alarm from the audience.

Susy talks on the phone, oblivious to her company, as Mike (Dave Scanlon) hides in plain sight in the background.
Sam (Cole Lewis) gives questionably helpful directions to Susy as she attempts to find a candlestick that she knocked off the table
Susy and her husband Sam (Cole Lewis) hug before he leaves for work
Susy dives and knocks the phone to the floor in order to stop Mike (Dave Scanlon) from calling the police
Mike (Dave Scanlon) looks on while Susy has a pity party after falling. Again.
Susy explains to Gloria (Evelyn Trent) that the missing doll may be used as evidence against her husband, Sam, in a murder case
Susy pushes Carlino (Austin LeRoy) to do a visual check for broken glass another other room so Gloria can escape from her hiding place
Susy tells Mike a tale about tricking Carlino as Carlino (Austin LeRoy) and Roat (Josh Pruiett) secretly listen in.
Susy urges Gloria (Evelyn Trent) to take the money from her purse to get a taxi to go find Sam
Susy waits for confirmation that Gloria has destroyed any remaining lights in the apartment besides Sam’s lamp
Mike (Dave Scanlon) drops his act and confronts Susy
Roat (Josh Pruiett) gloats about his kills and prepares to end this cat and mouse game
Roat (Josh Pruiett) intimidates Susy
Susy prepares to throw a vase full of ammonia in Roat’s face as he orders her to go to the bedroom
Roat found a light Susy forgot about. Susy dropped the knife in her frenzied attempt to shut the blocked fridge door. Uh-oh.
Roat threatens Susy as she hides a knife behind her back
Susy snaps back to consciousness and wields a lighter at the police, not processing that the fight is over
