I played Prudy Pingleton, Penny’s racist, strict, and overprotective mother. She disapproves of things like dancing, integration, and—above all—Penny’s involvement in them. She’s a real caricature of a person and I had a delightful time acting thoroughly appalled by absolutely everything happening onstage. With the director’s support, my personal challenge for myself was to startle at least one person in the cast every single time Prudy exploded into the room screaming for her daughter during the break in You Can’t Stop the Beat. I succeeded.
