My contribution to a Multiple Animator Project (MAP) hosted by Fizzy and Studio Maverick Art, set to the song The Killing Kind by Marianas Trench, and based on the Wings of Fire book series by Tui Sutherland.

I made this project an experiment in rotoscoping. I created and animated rough character models in Blender, then used the render as a guide when creating the 2D character animation in Clip Studio Paint.

My part features the characters Blue, Cricket, and Swordtail. In it, Blue and Cricket cure Swordtail of his paralysis and break out to the open skies.

Script:

Swordtail is in Misbehaviour’s Way, completely still like a statue from the Hivewing venom, Cricket uses a thread of flamesilk and drops it into a chemical and then pours it onto him to free him from his stiffness. They then fly out of the hive, with Blue riding on Swordtail’s back. (because Blue doesn’t have wings yet and can’t fly)

I got approval from the MAP hosts to deviate from the script in places to improve the part’s visual clarity. There wasn’t much time for Cricket to pour her chemical concoction, and I was able to come up with stronger compositions with Swordtail carrying Blue.
