Electric City Playhouse, 2025 Directed by Scott Gibson and Lynne Gibson
I played Susy Hendrix, the thriller’s recently blinded lead. Her husband, Sam, goes to work, leaving her home alone with nobody around except her nemesis, the preteen Gloria. Three con men who arranged Sam’s work trip arrive on a mission to make Susy help them obtain a doll full of heroin that he had been tricked into smuggling home from across the border. There’s just one problem – it’s missing.
This has been my most challenging and rewarding role so far. Beyond the research and practice required to convincingly and respectfully play a blind woman, I had half a dozen stunt falls and only left the stage for a few seconds at a time. Susy spends the play in constant conversation, getting increasingly worked up about the events unfolding around her until the frantic final showdown. The show’s pacing relied heavily on my constantly escalating energy, and achieving the intensity demanded by the climactic torture and attack sequence required Josh Pruiett (Roat) and I to build a strong foundation of trust. We had a blast eliciting genuine gasps and yelps of alarm from the audience.
